Tiff Needell explains it a lot better than I could. (Ignore the first twenty seconds)
Basically, they didn't really need all the much power to slide all over the place, because they had an absolutely minuscule amount of grip.

I think its more a function of giving the steering a little flick, and letting the weight overcome the skinny tires.
